Safely Learn from Mistakes in a Virtual Environment

December 20, 2018

Virtual environments allow learners to practice new skills safely and effectively. Making and learning from mistakes in the virtual world lessens the chances of mistakes in the real world – where it counts! Everyone knows that safety and compliance training is vital for ensuring the health and well-being of your employees, but how effective is your training? Are you engaging and challenging your employees with realistic scenarios and environments that promote critical thinking? If the answer is no, it’s time to reevaluate your approach.

Since the quality of your safety training can truly mean the difference between life and death, it could be the most important decision you make for your employees. Yet many companies force employees to sit through dated videos or dry, page-turner online courses and then expect them to be fully compliant with the important procedures they are intended to convey. Your employees’ safety is your top priority, so be sure that your training promotes effective learning and knowledge retention. Ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Is it realistic? - Are you recreating environments and situations that learners will encounter on the job? Are your scenarios “real” enough to make the learner feel a sense of urgency to solve the problem?

  2. Does it promote critical thinking? – It’s important to know steps and procedures, but memorizing and repeating information isn’t enough. Are you testing to see if employees can apply this information to a variety of situations they could encounter on the job?

  3. Are you allowing learners to safely learn from their mistakes? – Hands down, the best way to learn is by making mistakes and learning from them. Put your employees in situations where they must evaluate and make decisions that could lead to mistakes. Provide useful feedback that demonstrates the consequences of those decisions and allow them to practice until they get it right.

360 VR training environments are an effective and affordable way to ensure that you can answer ‘yes’ to all three questions. Check out a few example descriptions of the 360 VR safety courses we are currently creating.

Emergency Response Preparedness – Learners navigate scenarios related to the following situations in a virtual warehouse environment:

  • Workplace Violence – A disagreement between coworkers escalates to verbal threats and shoving

  • Bomb Threat - A bomb threat is called into the warehouse

  • Weather Evacuation - A tornado warning is issued

  • Medical Emergency – An employee loses consciousness

  • Chemical Spill – A damaged container leads to a chemical spill in the warehouse

Heat Stress/Heat-Related Illness – The course begins with a scenario in which an employee is overcome by heat stress on the job and portrays the results of improper response. Learners demonstrate knowledge of OSHA’s heat stress guidelines by navigating virtual scenarios in which they must recognize/prevent heat stress hazards in both indoor and outdoor workplace environments and decide what to do if a coworker shows symptoms.

Fall Prevention –Learners build awareness of fall prevention measures by navigating a variety of virtual workplace environments (warehouse, dock, inside cargo area). They must identify the possible dangers in each scene and are provided with feedback on how to prevent them through text boxes, images, and videos.
